Hi All,

I had a blast at the Atwater event this weekend... hope you all did too!  My favorites were the Teufel Bock and the Voo Doo Vator.  I thought the Vanilla Java Porter was pretty good too.  Anyone have a new favorite?  I liked this Tap Takeover varieties better than the Short's ones!

We have leftovers!  If you missed us this weekend, come Monday to try some Atwater brews.  (I won't tell anyone you missed it.)  If we saw you over the weekend, feel free to come back in and help us drink the rest!

As for other things going on... Pure Flavor will be joining us to rock the house on Thanksgiving Eve.  They start around 9pm!  Start your holiday off right with us!

Atwater Block!

Hey Guys,

I feel like I haven't posted in a while, but I'm pretty excited about the Tap Takeover happening this weekend!  For a little better preparation this time, I linked all the Atwater brews to web pages with descriptions and reviews...  I hope this helps!

Click here to check out Atwater Block's Website!

And remember, the Takeover starts at 4pm on this Friday the 11th!  Each Atwater Brew is $4.50 each or $5 for a sampler paddle... Hope to see you there!

Hi Everyone:
Thanks to everyone that came to the Tap Takeover... I had a blast!
The good news of the day is that we are having ANOTHER Tap Takeover-- this time with 17 ATWATER Brews!
That's coming up on November 11th and 12th!  As soon as I get a tap handle listing, I'll put it up for you, so stay tuned.
I'm pretty curious about the Atwater varieties, because I'm not as familiar with those as I was with the Short's beers.  Does anyone have an Atwater beer they recommend?  I've only tried the Dirty Blonde, Blocktoberfest and Voo Doo <--- My favorite!
Does anyone know the history of sweetest day?
The Tigers kind of broke my heart last night, and after such an exciting first 9 innings... But redeemed themselves tonight!  And the Lions are doing great and the Wings season is in full swing!
Next order of business:
This Saturday is Sweetest Day!  We'll be having some pretty amazing dinner specials, so treat your sweetie to CK Diggs!  And don't forget about the amazing desserts we get from Sweet Simplicity!
AND-  We're featuring a Special Menu for Sweetest Day:
  • Prime Rib
  • Caramel Apple Glazed Stuffed Pork
  • Ahi Tuna
  • Frangelico Chicken
So yummy!  Come see us this weekend!
Okay, bye!

The suspense was killing me!  GO TIGERS!

In addition to the Tap Takeover (which may I remind you starts tomorrow @ 4PM!), there's a Red Wings game!  And the Lions game is on Monday!

This month is off to a great start!

I hope everyone has heard about the contest we're holding on Facebook too...
The official rules are a few entries back, but the bottom line is this:

Post a picture during the Tap Takeover of you and friends at CK Diggs and you could win $50 in gift certificates!  The picture with the most "Likes" will win.  Good Luck!
TGIF!

Sunday, October 2, 2011

Hi Everyone:

I've decided I want to hold a contest!  This will be a first-time thing for me/CK Diggs, so I'm hoping to get tons of people to participate-- This means YOU.  It really will be more fun with more people.

Here's the deal:

During the Short's Tap Takeover on October 7th or 8th, take a picture of you and friends at CK Diggs and post it on our Facebook page's wall (www.facebook.com/ckdiggs).
The post with the most "likes" will be named the winner, and that person will win TWO $25 Gift Certificates to CK Diggs!

Contest Rules:
  • The individual that posts (on the CK Diggs page wall) the winning picture will be given the gift certificate.  This means that even if multiple people post the same picture, the post-er with the most "likes" will win and not the others.
  • The picture submitted must be taken at CK Diggs.  Make sure you have something from Diggs in the photo you enter.
  • In the event of a tie, the winners will each receive one of the two $25 gift certificates being awarded.
  • The contest/posting will start at 4:00pm on Friday October 7th, when the Takeover starts, and will run through Sunday October 9th at 10:00pm.  That should give you ample time to share your post with the world and get millions of "likes" and win!
  • The winner will be posted on Facebook at the end of the contest.  You may pick up your certificate at the restaurant or provide us with an address to send the certificate to.  This will be a one-of-a-kind document and cannot be duplicated.  Identification may need to be shown in order to receive the certificate.

Hey Guys,
Most of you probably already know this, but each month we send out an email detailing all the happenings for the coming month.  I sent the October one out this morning.  If you didn't receive it and would like to, please join our mailing list!
You can do this one of three ways.
  1. Visit our website and enter your email in the box labeled "Join Our Mailing List" on the bottom right of the home page.
  2. Next time you're at Diggs fill out the space designated for new mailing list email addresses and leave it for your server
  3. Leave me a comment on here or Facebook with your email address
I only send an email when something cool is happening, or at the end of each month for the next, so it's not like I'm spamming your Inbox 17 times per day.  There is also a full list of our draft beers in each newsletter, and links to our website and Facebook account.  If you have no interest-- keep checking in on here for CK updates!
Have a great Wednesday!
And don't forget about the TAP TAKEOVER NEXT WEEKEND!
Sten
Hex is categorized as an American Amber/Red Ale ABV of 5.40 percent.  I'm not sure why that makes it an Octoberfest, but I don't make the rules.  It's kind of sad that the Magic Hat brand craze has worn off a little from this time last year...

Beeravocate describes Hex as:
"A malty amber ale with hints of toffee and caramel and a slightly smoky finish."

That's pretty much dead on, from my experience.  This is one of the few beers I actually like by Magic Hat Brewing.
I don't have too much else to say on that.

If you'd like more information on this beer and other Magic Hat products, try these sites.

Goodnight.

Hey all,
.
I know I mentioned it in the last post, but I'm so excited about the Tap Takeover by Shorts next month, I'm going to mention it a few (tons) more times.  A reminder that it's October 7th and 8th.  We'll only be getting in one small keg of each flavor, and once it's gone, that's it!  So I recommend coming in earlier rather than later if you have a favorite or one flavor that's really important for you to try... I wouldn't want you to miss out.
.
I'm pretty stoked to have the Noble Chaos back for a bit myself.  I tried it once, we ran out the next day and it was heart-breaking. So, if you happen to get the last glass during this event, expect nothing short of a tackle from me.
.
Did anyone go to the Lion's Game?
.
Other than that, I'm pretty excited for the first Red Wings Game of the (Pre-) Season coming up!  It's the most wonderful time of the year-- HOCKEY SEASON!  If you don't agree, you still have Football and Baseball...
Okay, see you later Friends,
Styn

Onto the next Oktoberfest:  Hacker Pschorr
This, like the Spaten, is one of the original German Oktoberfests, and one of few allowed at the Oktoberfest celebration in Munich each year.  Although it's not my favorite, it's still delicious!
Here's what Best Beer Buzz had to say about the beer:
"Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest is one of six Oktoberfest beers permitted at the annual Oktoberfest festival in Munich, Germany, brewed by the Hacker-Pschorr Brewery (Hacker-Pschorr Bräu GmbH) also located in Munich. It is a traditional Bavarian Amber Oktoberfest that strictly follows the Reinheitsgebot Purity Law of 1516 and brewed with natural Spring Water, caramelized Barley, a traditional Hacker-Pschorr Yeast and noble Hallertau Hops for an alcohol content of 5.8% ABV and 28 IBUs over an original gravity of 13.7% by volume, packing in 185 calories per serving."

Find more information on Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest and all your other favorite brews by Best Beer Buzz here.

I'm not sure what he is referring to when he says, "original gravity."  Anyone care to clue me in?  Still, come in and try the Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest out... just $3.50 all month long.  If you're not a fan of the Oktoberfest Marzen-deliciousness, we have the original Hacker Pschorr Weisse as well (regular price, of course), and many many others too!

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Hey all,

It's September, and that means it's time for Oktoberfest!  We are fortunate enough to have 6 different varieties on draft this season.
  1. Spaten Oktoberfest
  2. Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest
  3. Bell's Octoberfest
  4. Atwater Block-toberfest
  5. Magic Hat Hex
  6. Samuel Adams Octoberfest

Let's start with my personal favorite-- Spaten Oktoberfest.  This was my favorite flavor last year, so I'm a little biased, plus it was one of the darker varieties.  Since all I can think of to describe it is that it's dark and delicious, slightly sweet and roasty tasting--Here's what Johnie from Beeradvocate had to say about the brew:

"Deep golden amber with a huge fluffy white head ... Smells of malt in spades. Bready caramel and burnt sugar mixed with just enough earthy floral hops to keep it from being sweet. Taste is rich and malty. Melanoids mixed with bread and grain with a spicy floral hop bite that keeps everything in check. Medium body and carbonation level, rich sweet malty mouthfeel. Light and easy to drink."

What's your favorite Oktoberfest?

Need serving/chaffing dishes?  Paper plates and cups?  Napkins?  Dressing?  Serving utensils?  We have those too!

Call for details!

Monday, August 15, 2011

So, I've been reading up on one of the beers we serve: Stella Artois.  I never really thought much about it, even though I've served it a million times and often hear it's great.  After finally giving it a try, I really like it.  It's a nice beer that tastes delicious and doesn't waste any time or effort trying to be overly fancy.  It's just a crisp refreshing beer.  Of course, that's just my opinion.

According to Beeradvocate, "the smell is very light, but consists of honey and mild grape notes," and Stella is "very drinkable."  Feel free to read more here.

This beer is served year-round, so you never have to worry about catching it during a certain season... we keep it stocked all the time!  Come in and try one if you get the chance.

Sten

But- in second place is our weekend deal on draft beer!
From 3p-7p on Friday and Saturday all draft beer is just $3.50! Come on in and start the weekend right!

...For those of you that work the weekends, take advantage of our Beers of the Month:  All Short's brews are just $3.50 all the time.  Yes, it's a little less of a selection from the 40 drafts on the weekends, but you still have three tasty choices:  Bellaire Brown, Pandemonium Pale Ale, and Soft Parade!

We've been working on re-vamping our website for the last few months and it's finally ready!  In my personal opinion, it's way more awesome than before.  If you have time, check it out here, or type www.ckdiggs.com into your browser.

We'd love some feedback on the new site... do you think it's awesome like I do?  Do you think it sucks?  Let us know!

It's happening.

You've all heard the rumors...

After 13 years of amazing service, Haley, my favorite bartender (and I'm guessing yours too) is taking a position with HP.  Her last day is Wednesday July 27th starting at 5pm.  If you can find the time, come in and say hi (and goodbye) one more time.  (Chris is still pushing for her to pick up a shift every once in a while, but don't tell her that!)

Haley, we wish you all the best!

Stone Brewing's Arrogant Bastard Ale

We've stocked this beer for as long as I can remember.  I think that most people try it because of the interesting name it has, but maybe not.  Advertised as "Liquid Arrogance" by the experts at Stone Brewing, they also have this to say about the brew:
"This is an aggressive ale. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory."
Other Stone products we carry include the Ruination IPA and the Stone Smoked Porter (bottles).
Check out the rest of what Stone Brewing has to offer here

Sten

PS- We have half off appetizers on Mondays as well as the 20 cent wings!

Saturday, July 23, 2011

Among the many drafts available is the new-ish Arbor Brewing Company Blonde.  We've had this beer for a few weeks but let's chat about it anyway?  It's local and delicious!

Here's what the experts at RateBeer.com have to say about this brew:
"This is a sophisticated fruit ale that doesn’t forget it’s a beer. Rich and flavorful medium bodied beer with a fresh, floral strawberry aroma. Citrus, spice, and fruit are blended seamlessly for a subtle yet distinct flavor that never turns too sweet."
This draft is only available during summer months so get it before it's gone!

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Hey all,

I hope everyone is doing their best to avoid these high temps today.  Hopefully you're hanging by the pool or hiding inside with some air conditioning.

Beat the heat at Diggs!

Cool down with a cold brew?  (This heat is seriously ridiculous.)
Don't forget about our $3 margaritas!

Also, any large salad is just $6 all day today, so stop in for a "cool" meal.

See you soon.

Sten

Monday, July 18, 2011

Don't forget about this great event!  Tickets are $20 and 10 percent of purchases will be donated to Lighthouse!

Saturday, July 16, 2011

We just got a new beer!  Atwater Brewing's Dirty Blonde.  The commercial description of this brew is: "Made with unmalted wheat, coriander and orange peel to help you live smart and enjoy everyday."
Think this is a nice, light, summer beer; easy to drink and refreshing.  I do think the "orange peel aroma" actually smells like Froot Loops. =) Try one today and let us know what you think!

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

Hey Guys,

Just sending out a reminder that tomorrow starts our 3 day celebration... It's our 13th Anniversary!  We are so lucky to have such amazing customers!  Of course we'll have the neon colored frisbees to hand out and the 13th Anniversary pint glasses available all 3 days.  There will be complementary appetizer munchies set up from 5:30pm to 7:00pm too.

I'm pretty excited, and we hope to see you all there!

Other News?
This super-hot weather is making being inside basically torture, so here are some suggestions to enjoy the outdoors and CK Diggs at the same time!

1.  Sit on the patio for dinner or just for drinks
2.  Get some carry-out and have a picnic!
3.  Have an outdoor party!  Luau maybe?  We offer catering services! Call for more details.

If you don't enjoy the outdoors, you could:

1.  Eat inside CK Diggs.
2.  Get carry-out and have a "picnic" in your living room.
3.  Have an indoor party!  (We can cater that too.)

Those are all the great ideas I have.

Have a great day everyone!

-Sten

Come party with us!  We wouldn't still be here without all of you!  Thank you!

Hey Guys,

It's been a little while since I've updated, but things have been pretty busy.

So, what's new at Diggs?

Red Wings are out of the playoffs :(
But the Bruins win tonight was amazing!

The Patio is Open!
It's been raining so often lately that we haven't had it open as much as I'd like, but hopefully all this bad weather will stop and we can welcome nice sun-shiny days for the rest of the summer.

Memorial Day:
We will be opening at 3pm on Saturday May 28th.
We will be closed on Memorial Day, May 30th.

New Website:
www.ckdiggs.com will be getting a face-lift!  It's about time!  I'll keep you posted as to the date we launch the new site.

That's about it for now.  Does anyone have any news/updates on the possible NFL lockout?  I keep hearing different things about it...

I'm  letting the world know what our new Summer beers are since it's been so nice out lately...
  • Summer Shandy
  • Sam Adams Summer Ale
  • Newcastle Summer Ale
  • Woodchuck Summer (Bottle)
  • Magic Hat Vinyl
I'm also counting Hoegaarden as a "Summer" beer, because it just strikes me as that, although we have it available year-round.  Any suggestions for more Summer Brews?  Let us know!

On a much much much much sadder note, watching the Wings lose was the most painful part of the day.  Does anyone think we can beat the odds and win four games in a row?   I'm choosing to be a believer!  Go Wings!

We now have Twitter (I'm getting over my fear and trying it out).  My favorite person to follow so far is Conan O'Brien on my personal account @kristynzigo... but you can check us out at @CK_Diggs.  We need some followers, as we only have two at the moment.  A big Thanks to @baseball_mlb and @AirWolF13th for being the first and second!

Can anyone tell me what the # means and when to use it?  (I need Twitter-Assistance.)

Since last time I was talking about the summer specials, I should mention the new daily specials too, pictured on the left.  The burger and fries special along with the pizza special were a pretty big hit the last two days... I hope customers are just as happy about the $5 You Choose Two Combo.  Being a completely broke college student, I love finding deals!  This is less expensive than most quick dining restaurants and we bring the food right to you at a table!  I hate how some places give you those buzzer things or call out your name loudly, making CK Diggs way better to me!

Come check out the specials!

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let you know about the new specials menu we started today.  This menu runs from May 1st until August 31st.  We still offer the entire regular menu as well, there are just more choices now!

My new favorite is the Veggie Burger with Sweet Potato Fries!  I don't know exactly what the ingredients are, but they sure were delicious, especially when I added cheese tomatoes and some ketchup to the mix.  Sweet potato fries = yum!

The Spinach Salad is a returning favorite from last summer along with the Turkey Ranch Rollup.

I tried the Southwestern Eggrolls this morning and thought they were a great little starter.  I like to dip them in our house fajita dressing rather than the sweet and sour that it comes with, but the choice is yours when you order them of course!

I haven't tried the Firecracker Linguini yet, but I'll keep you posted... or try it and tell me how it is!  It sounds spicy!

Talk to you all later.

Hello All,

It's been a little while, but I just had to write and let everyone know that on Thursday April 28th CK Diggs will be hosting a fundraiser for the Make A Wish Foundation run by Avondale Highschoolers!  The event is open all day long (11a-12a) and a portion of the day's sales will be donated to this awesome cause.  Please come in to show your support if you can!

If you are already planning on attending, be sure to bring your flyer with you!

See you soon,

Sten

What a busy night!

So nice to see so many familiar faces... and so many Avondale families!  It seemed like everyone in the whole restaurant knew each other.

The Tigers pulled out a great win in a ten-inning game.  Jim Leyland had this to say: "I wouldn't have gotten this win tonight if I didn't have the players. It's all about the players and it always will be."  Congrats on his 1,500 managerial career wins!

Met some one who reads our blog today.  (Hi Kevin!)  So exciting!

Getting psyched for the Wings game tomorrow!

What a great day for Detroit sports!  Wins for the Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings!

I didn't actually watch the Pistons game, but according to ESPN they slid by with a win against the 76ers: 104 to 100.
Jordanne and I went to the Tigers game this afternoon (Thanks for the tickets, Chris!), and although I now resemble a lobster due to my wicked sunburn, the weather was perfect and the win made the day even better.  The crowd was smaller than any other game I've been to, but I doubt many people can get off work to go to game in the middle of the day on a Wednesday.
Later, while working, we got to watch the Wings start the playoffs right with a win against the Coyotes.  Being a huge Wings fan, you all know how happy this makes me.  I hope Zetterberg returns soon though... I always think Datsyk is sad without him, not that it kept him from scoring!  Great to see so many fellow Wings fans at Diggs tonight!

To talk about more of our drafts:
Short's Brews are on special this month, all just $3.50...
Here's a little information on each pulled directly from the Short's Website.  For more information on Short's Brewing, please visit www.shortsbrewing.com

Short's Bellaire Brown:  American Brown Ale

"A full flavored brown ale that derives sweet caramel and toasted qualities from four different kinds of malt and specialty grains. Select hop varieties add enticing aroma to the nose and create a dry finish. This ale is so dark and rich, it’s hardly classifiable as brown, but is certainly considered a delicious masterpiece."  6.6 percent ABV
(I think this beer has a slight chocolate taste)

Short's Pandemonium Pale Ale:  American Pale Ale

"This coppered colored American pale ale lends its hue to hearty two row malts and hand selected specialty grains. Hop additions balance the wort, resulting in a tasty union of flavors and earthy aromas. Behold the bitter hysteria!"  5 percent ABV

Short's Soft Parade:  Fruit Infused Rye Ale

"This gourmet specialty is engineered of toasted rye flakes and two row malted barley. Loaded with pureed strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries, we refer to this fermented potion as a fruit infused rye ale. The result is a refreshing fruit delicacy that’s easy to drink, appealing to look at, and finishes dry."  8 percent ABV
(This beer is strong, drink carefully, served in a 10oz snifter)

That's all for now,

Let's take a minute to talk about one of my favorite beers: Guinness.

This beer is categorized as a dry stout, and has 4.1 percent alcohol.

It's true, Guinness is a stout.  It's dark, and does the whole cascading thing, and isn' t carbonated like other most other beers.  It takes a few minutes to pour correctly, 119 seconds according to Guinness' website, so don't be surprised if it takes your server a little longer to bring to you.

I used to hear about Guinness being extremely heavy, "a meal in a glass," needing to be cut with a knife and fork, etc, but it's a lie.  I promise.  Very light-tasting for a stout and only 125 calories per pint, which is less than Labatt Light and many other "light" beers.

PS- Half and Half's are amazing and can be made with just about anything, the most common being Black and Tans (Guinness and Bass Ale).  We like Guinness and Fuller's London Pride.  Some like using Blue Moon, commonly called, "Black and Blue."  The latest creation at Diggs is a pairing with Short's Soft Parade... still trying to think of a name for that combo.  Any suggestions?
Like I said, it's one of my favorites. Try it!

Hello!

Hello,

First off, if you frequent CK Diggs, I'd like to personally thank you!  You keep us in business, and personally, you all keep me company and we are grateful for both!  Thank you for your patronage!  I hope you keep coming to see us!

A few employees were tossing around the idea of starting a blog for the restaurant, so here I am, blogging.  I'm not too sure everything we'll be writing about, but Jeff, one of our waiters, has decided to become an expert on our beers and let you know the details on them... What a tough job!  I'll try to help too.

I'll be filling you in on CK Diggs happenings and other thoughts since I'm pretty chatty.

We have a Facebook account too, but sometimes the 400 characters it gives you to write just isn't enough.  If you like us, "Like" us at www.facebook.com/ckdiggs and be sure to print out the coupon available in the photos section as many times as you'd like.  We don't have a Twitter, because Twitter freaks me out a little and I don't know why.  Maybe soon?

Check back for updates. Comments are more than welcome!
